Everything parents need to know about nursery and early years entry
Explore pre prep schoolsPre-prep schools cover the early years of a child's education, typically from age 3 (Nursery) through to Year 2 (age 7). They are usually attached to, or have strong feeder relationships with, prep schools, and their principal purpose is to give children the best possible foundation in literacy, numeracy and social development. In independent education, this stage is treated with as much care as any other — class sizes are small, specialist teachers are introduced early, and pastoral welfare is paramount.
Registration for the most sought-after London pre-preps can open at birth — or even before. For schools outside London, the window is more forgiving, but most popular pre-preps advise registering by the time your child turns two. Entry assessment at this age is informal: schools are observing how a child plays, responds to instruction and interacts with other children rather than testing academic ability.
At this age, what matters most is warmth, stimulation and stability. A good pre-prep will have a happy, settled atmosphere, confident children, and teachers who clearly know each child individually. Curriculum breadth — music, art, sport, forest school — matters more at this stage than academic results. Look for a school that introduces structured phonics and early maths without making it feel like pressure.
Pre-prep fees at independent schools in London typically run from £14,000 to £22,000 per year for full-time places; outside London the range is broadly £9,000–£16,000. Bursaries at pre-prep level are rare — most meaningful financial support is reserved for senior school entry. Some schools do offer sibling discounts, and nursery sessions can sometimes be offset against the government's 15/30 hours funded childcare entitlement for 3–4 year olds.
Most children in independent pre-preps move automatically into the prep department at Year 3 (age 7–8), though some schools set a brief transition assessment. If your child is at a standalone pre-prep, the 7+ is the key hurdle: competitive entry to London prep schools at this age is serious, and preparation typically begins in Year 2. A good standalone pre-prep will support this process and be transparent about where its leavers go.
