If your child has special educational needs, choosing a school is a higher-stakes decision than usual, and the independent sector adds its own complications. Provision varies enormously from one private school to the next, and a school's warm words at an open day are no substitute for understanding exactly what support it can actually deliver day to day.

How SEN provision differs in the independent sector

- What learning support do you provide, and how is it staffed and structured?
- Do you have specialist SEN staff (such as qualified specialist teachers), and what are their qualifications and experience?
- How do you support children with my child's specific needs — and can you give concrete examples?
- Is learning support included in the fees, or charged separately? (This can be a significant additional cost.)
About how it works day to day
- How is support delivered — in-class help, withdrawal sessions, one-to-one, small groups, or a mix?
- How do you adapt teaching and assessment for children who need it?
- How do you identify and monitor needs, and how often is support reviewed?
- How do teachers across all subjects know about and respond to a child's needs, not just the support staff?
About communication and partnership
- How do you work with parents, and how often will we hear how my child is doing?
- Will you work with external professionals (educational psychologists, therapists, specialists) where needed?
- How do you involve my child in decisions about their support as they get older?
About outcomes and fit
- What experience do you have supporting children like mine, and how have they progressed?
- Are there needs you feel you can't meet well — and would you tell me honestly?
- What access arrangements (such as extra time) do you put in place for exams, and how is that decided?
A school that answers these openly, with specifics and honesty about limits, is far more reassuring than one offering only warm generalities.
How to judge whether a school can meet your child's needs
Beyond the answers, look for evidence:
- Specifics over slogans. "We're very inclusive" means little. Concrete descriptions of staffing, methods and examples mean a lot.
- Honesty about limits. The best schools tell you frankly when a need is beyond what they can support well. That honesty protects your child far more than over-promising does.
- A genuine track record. Experience supporting children with similar needs, and evidence those children thrived, matters more than intentions.
- Whole-school awareness. Support shouldn't sit in a silo. In strong schools, every teacher understands and adapts for a child's needs, not just the learning-support department.
- Your child's likely experience. Picture an ordinary day. Will your child feel supported and included, or singled out and struggling? The atmosphere and attitude matter as much as the formal provision.
Watch the practicalities
Several practical points often catch families out:
- Cost. Learning support is frequently charged on top of fees, sometimes substantially. Establish the full cost — fees (now including VAT), support charges and extras — before committing.
- Assessment expectations. Some academically selective independent schools have demanding entry assessments that may not suit every child with SEN; look for schools whose admissions and ethos genuinely fit your child.
- The right environment. A high-pressure, intensely academic culture can overwhelm some children with SEN, while a more nurturing setting helps them flourish. Match the environment to the child.
- Continuity. Consider whether support will continue consistently as your child moves up the school and as staff change.
Mainstream or specialist?
For some children, a mainstream independent school with strong learning support is ideal — they benefit from a broad, inclusive environment with help built in. You know your child better than anyone. If a school's answers feel evasive, or the environment feels wrong despite impressive facilities, take that seriously. Equally, a school that may look less prestigious but clearly understands and supports children like yours could be the best choice you make.
